Nomination forms need to be completed and submitted by December 31, 2011. A committee of WSFMA partners and stakeholders will review the nominations and choose the winners. Like last year, the WSFMA board will recognize the winners during Farmers Market Week 2012 and work with managers to organize tours and promote shopping at all farmers markets.

Anyone can nominate for any category! Please think about a market that shines, with a vibrant atmosphere, excellent selection of local produce, a special farmer or a vendor who helps make your market what is it weekly. If you don’t have the time, ask a friend or a goup of friends to complete the form!

Help! We are back to planning for our second big service ~ Christmas. Sadly, we are planning on 500 families.

If your group can help out, here are our needs:

Apple sauce: 54 small plastic jars
Cereal: 80 boxes
Coffee: 128 small jars
Condensed Milk: 151 cans
Evaporated Milk: 83 cans
Green Beans: 125 cans
Jelly: 115 jars
Juice: (64 oz) 220 bottles
Mandarin Oranges: 348 cans
Mashed Potatoes: 254 boxes, bags or pouches
Mushrooms: 233 small cans
Olives: 415 cans
Peas: 250 cans
Syrup: 72 bottles
Tea: 480 boxes
Yams: 195 cans

Other items we always accept: open bags of diapers and pet food. We are also asking for small, whole chickens (4 pounders) and hams (4 -8 pounds).

If you can give - great, please call to "reserve" your sponsorship. If you are not able to help in this manner, will you please help spread the word? We will need to have them delivered on or before December 19th, but please pledge in advance, so I will know what we will have to buy! Thank you for your consideration!

Nikki Schilling is a talented musician who has been singing and performing in the greater Seattle area since she was 5 years old. Nikki discovered jazz singing in high school and after her very first jazz performance won an award as an outstanding vocalist at the 2005 Edmonds Jazz Festival. Snohomish embraces The 3/50 Project by presenting a special evening with project founder Cinda Baxter

Cinda Baxter, the founder of, The 3/50 Project, will be presenting “Building Business from the Ground Up” in Snohomish on Wednesday evening, September 14th.

The 3/50 Project is an initiative that supports local merchants and communities. The message, “Pick 3. Spend 50. Save your local economy,” asks members of the community to select three local businesses they do not want to see disappear and spend $50 per month of their normal budget in those businesses. The goal of the project is to increase revenue for locally-owned businesses.

In addition to Baxter’s presentation, the event will include networking, appetizers and no-host wine tasting. The presentation will be held at the soon to be opened Wine Cellars of Washington at 1011 Second Street, Snohomish. The event will take place from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

All businesses and community members interested in supporting The 3/50 Project initiative and local businesses throughout the Puget Sound are encouraged to attend. The Second Annual Pie Contest was held at the Snohomish Farmers Market on Thursday August 4, 2011. A total of 7 pies were entered in this year's contest and I might add- they were some mighty good looking pies too.

The first place winner in this year's contest was Janice Kloeck with her Strawberry - Rhubarb Pie. Second place winner was Mindy Gardner with her Yummy Blueberry Pie, and the third place winner was Tammy Beaumont with her Rhubarb pie. The pies entered in the contest included blueberry, peach - raspberry, rhubarb and strawberry - rhubarb pies. After the judging was completed, slices of pie were then sold for $3.00 per slice- $121.00 was raised and donated to the Snohomish Food Bank.

Prizes for this year's contest were donated by McDaniel's Do-It-Center, Clear Creek Pottery, and from the following vendors at the Snohomish Farmers Market: Blue Stilly Coffee Roasters, Felix Spices, Past and Present Photo, Serendipity Dips, Snohomish Soap Company, Song-Croft, Tomas the Artist, Deborah's Fine Jewles's Gifts and Velvet Swan.

The Snohomish Farmers Market donated Market Bags for each Entrant, Judge, Helper and Coordinator- Thank you! I also want to give a big thank you for the Judges: Jennica Dalton, Lyndsey Dalton, Sondy McCutcheon and Sue Sullivan, and for Contest Helper Allison Dalton- THANK YOU!

She is passionate about food, people and local ingredients and has evangelized for the cause of excellent food in Snohomish County since she started her business three years ago. Raised Italian, Joan has traveled to Italy several times and studied both cooking technique as well as ingredients, and has embraced the farm-to-table concept in her own cooking and teaching. Being in a class with Joan ensures a sense of fun, belonging and a warm gathering—not to mention delicious food! We need your help with waste management at the Snohomish Farmers Market. Now that we have a variety of food vendors we have more items to sort in our WASTE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM.

Recycles include: glass bottles, cans and plastic waters bottle with caps off. Please empty your containers as the liquids cannot be recycled.

NO SHAVED ICE OR PLASTIC CUPS, NO TO GO COFFEE CUPS WITH LIDS - THESE GO IN THE TRASH

FOOD SCRAPS: Food you did not eat, the paper plate, napkins, paper from hot dogs, cup cake wrappers, pizza boxes, and other paper. NO PLASTIC FORKS OR KNIVES, or PLASTIC WRAP - PLEASE!

Food scraps go to Cedar Grove, to be made into compost for the yard.

Did you know only 1/3 of our waste at the Snohomish Farmers Market is acutally TRASH. Please help us by sorting your items!

Greetings market-goers! We've got a couple of great events lined up for tomorrow that we hope you'll attend.

First, at 4 PM we'll be hosting the Snohomish High School Jam Club. This group of young folks will perform for an hour, then launch into a set of Beatles' songs at 5 PM. All are invited to join in and sing along! This will be a wonderful, community-oriented event. Bring your Beatles-loving friends! This week's music sponsor is PostNet of Snohomish. I am passionate about farmers markets, and I am very excited about getting involved with such a successful leader in farmers markets in Western Washington. I hope to make a career in local foods, and am particularly interested in working with farmers markets in the future.

Interning with the Snohomish Farmers Market will teach me valuable market management skills that will help me as I look forward to the next stage of my life after graduating form Kenyon College, OH in May of 2011.

About This Campaign

Thanksgiving is a great time to start thinking about local food. And for stepping up to the plate in support of local farms, a healthier environment, local economies
and communities.

In 2007, Cascade Harvest Coalition, initiated the Eat Local for Thanksgiving campaign to focus awareness on the connections that buying locally has in our lives and reconnect our Thanksgiving traditions with local agricultural traditions of celebrating the harvest by asking individuals to "Take the Pledge" and purchase one locally grown item for their Thanksgiving meal.

While you may think one pledge and one butternut squash from the farmers market isn't going to make a huge difference, think again. If one person starts to think differently about where their food comes from, who grew it or why it matters, then that butternut squash becomes an agent for change and you become one too.

Every pledge translates into support for preserving farmland, a more robust economy, and cleaner environment. You're also adding your voice to those of thousands of people throughout the region in saying how important this is to our communities, which is central to having a dependable, regional food supply.

On the day we join together and give thanks for the abundance of the harvest and bringing family and friends together in celebration and community, let us also be grateful for the abundance of local farms throughout our region, our hardworking farmers and the food they put on our tables.

As part of Olaiya’s studies she spent a year in Paris where, as is the case for many a chef, her fondness for food and cooking tumbled into true love. After graduation from Yale University, she cut her culinary chops in Boston, before running her own small cafe and catering business.

Thursday July 22, 2010

Contest Rules:
1. Pie must be entered in the name of the person who made it.

2. Category of Pie:
Fruit Pies using fresh in-season Washington grown local fruit.

3. Prizes / Ribbons
1st = blue ribbon, 2nd = red ribbon, 3rd = white ribbon
Honorable Mention ribbons [3], Participant ribbons [all entries]

Prizes will be awarded according to the value of each prize donated from the following Snohomish Merchants:

Clear Creek Pottery
Kusler Pharmacy
McDaniel's Do-It Center
Garden City Grange- Washington State Grange Cookbooks

4. Enter Pie
a. Bring your pie to the contest site at the Snohomish Farmer's Market between 3:00 and 4:00PM on the day of the Contest- Thursday July 22, 2010
b. Each pie entry will be assigned a number.

NOTE: The person [coordinator] running the Pie-Baking Contest will have the final say on acceptability of pies. Please- no pies that need refrigeration.

c. Fill out the registration form;
i. Acknowledge that the entered pies become the property of the Snohomish Farmers Market and that slices will be sold at the Market.

ii. If you are a winner, you give your permission to have your photo taken during the announcement ceremony and have it used for the Snohomish Farmer's Market promotional materials, including the SFMarket website.

d. Recipes- A copy of your pie recipe is required for both the filling and the crust [pastry].

5. Judging
a. Judging will be done by pie number and will start at about 4:30PM.
b. Judges will vote independently of each other.
c. Judges will re-judge any pies that have tied.
d. Judges decisions are final.

6. Scoring Criteria- to be used by the judges [total of 100 points]:
a. Overall appearance of pie: 1-25 points
Your first impression of this pie- does it look nice; crust looks done; crust burned/scorched; filling run-over? Would you want to eat a piece?

b. Crust- double crust pie [may use lattice crust on top]: 1-25 points
Is the crust done; crust over-done [burned/scorched]; are both the top and bottom crust done; bottom crust soggy; crust tender/flaky; crust tough; too thick; too greasy; too grainy/lumpy; taste/appealing; crust too salty; does it follow recipe.

c. Filling- fresh in-season Washington grown fruit must be used: 1-25 points
Is the filling done; fruit too raw/undercooked; overdone/mushy; too sweet, too sour; too thick, too runny; is thickening agent [flour, corn starch, tapioca] done; does fruit flavor come through or is it over-powered by another flavor; does it follow recipe.

d. Taste / Flavor of pie: 1-25 points
What is the combined taste/flavor of the pie- does the crust flavor deter from the filling.
Is the filling overpowered by other flavors; i.e. too much spice used.
Is the main fruit used the main flavor of this pie- could you tell.
Did you enjoy eating this piece of pie.

7. Scoring Points: 100 points total
a.Each judge assigns a numerical value (1-25 points) in each criteria category, without consultation with the other judges.
b.The pie receiving the highest total numerical value is the winner, and so forth to determine second, third and HM awards.
c. In the case of a tie, the judges will judge again those pies that tied.

8. Results:
Winners will be announced and awards presented after the judging is complete [6:00PM].

9. Disposition of Pies:
After the Contest Results are announced and prizes awarded the pies will then be sold by the slice and funds raised will be donated to the Snohomish Food Bank.

10. Please let us know by July 19, 2010 if you will be entering the 1st Annual Snohomish Farmers Market Fruit Pie Bake Off. To register tell us the type of pie you will be entering, include your name, phone number, address and email to SnohomishFarmersMarket@gmail.com. That will be very helpful.

The event is scheduled for Thursday, July 22, 2010 at the Snohomish Farmers Market, 1st and Cedar in Historic downtown Snohomish. Check-in is 4:00p.m. Winners will be awarded at 6 p.m.

Pranee first learned Thai cooking as a child in Phuket, Thailand, where her mom was a village chef famous for her Hua Mok (fish cake). Today, Pranee is a member of the International Association of Culinary Professionals (IACP), a caterer, tour guide and cooking instructor. At the present, Stephen has composed and performed a number of pieces reflecting his own experience living and studying music in areas such as the inner-city, the Philippines, the Republic of Korea, Japan, and a variety of other lifestyles throughout North America.
Stephen has studied and performed on the piano and electronic keyboard for over 25 years.

Stephen Duster has received a Master of Arts in Education, a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration, and an undeclared major in Music at Pacific Lutheran University, Tacoma, Washington. Steve currently works as a teacher for the Department of Defense Schools: He also is the owner and founder of Sand Dust Studios and Elkanah Records. click here to listen.

Chef's Demo by Grilla Bites Organic Eatery in Snohomish

Anne Dottai, known to many as Annie, discovered the original Grilla Bites in downtown Chico, Ca when her daughter, Deanna, started college there in 2004. When Anne went to help Deanna get moved into her dorm, Deanna was very excited to take her mom to the cool little organic café she had found. Recently this May, Anne went down to California to watch Deanna graduate from college, boy does time fly.

On Thursday, Anne will be demonstrating how to make and serve Quinoa using fresh tomatoes supplies by the Flying Tomato Farm and parsley from Frog Chorus Farm.
